Luxarazzi 101: Lannoy Family Tiara

© Cour Grand Ducale / Vic Fischbach
As I know that this is what a lot of people want to know (I'm looking at you, Order of Splendor), here are the information that the cour has published about the Lannoy family tiara.

© Cour Grand Ducale / Vic Fischbach

"For her wedding with HRH Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy wears a family tiara that her sisters and sisters-in-law have worn on their wedding days.

The tiara is composed of 270 old-cut brilliants set in platinum, with a diamond in an inverted pear shape superimposed in the centre. A dozen larger brilliants stand out owing to their closed sets, appearing like buttons along the patterns of leafed scrolls. The contours of the tiara, traced by the arrangements of the stones, are underlined by a thin line of platinum gilded pearls.

The tiara was made by Altenloh in Brussels. Ernest Altenloh, son of a silversmith, created the company in 1878. At the beginning of the 20th century, he was joined by Robert Altenloh, who rapidly established the international reputation of the company through the quality of its jewels and the designs of its silver work. Their shop, first located on the rue de la Madeleine close to the Royal Palace (1, place Royale – now the Magritte Museum), also sold pieces by other designers. Among its clients were the Count and Countess of Flanders (the parents of King Albert I), the Queen of Saxony and the Prince of Ligne.

'Supplier to the Court' under King Albert and Queen Elisabeth, the silversmith and jeweller's shop attracted the wealthy Belgian aristocracy and well-off international clientele."

A few more pictures of the official gala dinner. As you can see below, Princess Tessy wore Grand Duchess Marie-Adelaide's Diamond Sapphire Tiara and sapphire earrings. Princess Alexandra opted for what seems to be her favourite tiara as she wears it frequently, the smaller one of the two diamond floral tiaras.

First Impressions of the Gala Dinner

Screenshot from Livestream of Luxemburger Wort / Wort.lu
About an hour ago, the pre-wedding gala dinner at the palais and the chambre de deputés started. On the picture above you can see Princess Stéphanie, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa toasting each other after the Grand Duke pronounced his speech. I was able to catch some of the guests arriving on a livestream.

Prince Félix, Prince Louis and Prince Sébastien arrived together, sans princesses Alexandra and Tessy whom I couldn't spot.

Princess Marie-Astrid and husband Archduke Carl-Christian arrived together. The princesses wore a red dress and Joséphine-Charlotte's Van Cleef and Arpels Emerald Peacock and Diamond Convertible Tiara (just trying to squeeze in all the details that I know).

Princess Margaretha also wore a red dress together with the aquamarine bandeau tiara that once belonged to her late mother.

Diane, the wife of Prince Jean, also opted for a red dress together with the smaller version of the Diamond Art Deco tiara that belongs to Princess Sibilla.

Princess Sibilla brought out the best surprise of the evening: she wore Queen Victoria Eugenia's Aquamarine Tiara that is owned by her mother's family. A lot of people thought that the tiara might have been sold to the Spanish royal family but today is prove that it wasn't. (I, personally, did not believe the story.)

As you can see above, Princess Stéphanie wore the bigger of the two diamond floral tiaras that was worn by the sisters of Grand Duke Jean at their weddings.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa opted for the convertible Chaumet tiara. To my untrained eyes it looks as if both Maria Teresa and Stéphanie chose Elie Saab gowns.

First pictures can be found at Belga and PPE.

Grand Duke Henri's Speech

At the gala dinner, Grand Duke Henri just gave a speech honouring his son and new daughter-in-law.

French version

Chère Stéphanie,

Cher Guillaume,

My dear Stéphanie,

My dear Guillaume,

On this, the evening of your wedding, we, your parents, would like to say how happy and proud we are that you are embarking on this journey together through life.

We have seen your love blossom for more than two years now. It has grown over time into this couple beaming with happiness, whom we have the pleasure of seeing before us today. You have travelled this path together. Therefore, you know that marriage is a union, a commitment which is renewed each day. It is aharbinger of continuity which will lead our cherished country towards a future that we fervently hope will be prosperous and peaceful.

My dear Stéphanie,

We welcome you on this day with overwhelming joy. We know that, through your sensitivity, your intelligence and your devotion, you will bring great happiness to our son. The fact that you have already endured the most difficult of ordeals, notably the sudden passing of your beloved mother, has shown us that you are capable of strength and courage in the face of adversity.

Alix, for those of us fortunate enough to have known her, will always remain an exceptional person. From heaven above, she will watch over you, so that you, too, will be a united and exemplary couple, as were Alix and Philippe. May their example guide you throughout your lives.

At the time of your engagement and your presentation to the national authorities, the Luxembourg people immediately adopted you as their future Princess. Your radiance, your beliefs and your tenderness make you the perfect person to assist and support Guillaume throughout his life. We love you and are happy and grateful that you have chosen our son.

We would like to thank your dear parents for the unconditional support that they showed during the blossoming of your love. Alix, your dear mother, shall remain in our hearts, especially during these celebrations. Your father Philippe is giving the hand of his final daughter, his youngest child, in marriage. We can imagine how he must feel.

The union between our two families, with well-established traditions, based on Christian values, passed on to their children, is also a pledge of strength for our young couple.

My dear Guillaume,

For Stéphanie and for you, now begins the grand and wonderful adventure of marriage. We have watched you grow up to become a responsible individual, resolutely committed to the service of others and, in particular, to those who are suffering. Your great ability to interact with others allows you to perform your duties with intelligence and ease. The trade missions which you lead with such skill are indispensable to the promotion of our country worldwide, particularly in the challenging situation in which we currently find ourselves.

Your wife shall be, as your mother is for me, steadfast in her support of the difficult but oh so rewarding tasks which await you. Yes, my dear Guillaume, we are proud of you, you are a man of duty and your guiding principle is the common good. We have every confidence in your judgement, but remember too that we shall always be there to support you and help you if you so desire.

Your Majesties,

Your Royal Highnesses,

Your Excellencies,

Dear family and friends,

We would like to thank you, our guests, some of whom have travelled a great distance to attend the marriage of Stéphanie and Guillaume. We are honoured by your presence. Tomorrow you shall bear witness to this new union which, we all hope, will be happy and prosperous. With this, I invite you to raise your glasses and drink to the health and happiness of our young couple.

Long live the happy couple, long live Luxembourg!

Luxarazzi 101: the Grand Ducal Palace

With the gala dinner starting in just a few minutes, it's a good time as any to have a look at the history of the palais grand-ducal.

Photo: José-Noël Doumont / Cour grand-ducale
When the city of Luxembourg was granted the charter of emanicpation in 1244, it was decided that a town hall should be build at the New Market Square.

When the Burgundians seized Luxembourg 1443, Philip the Good decided that the Town Hall would be his palace and the seat of his council. In a gesture of appeasement, Mary of Burgundy granted the usufruct of the Town Hall to the magistrate, who resumed ownership three years later.

In 1541 the then town hall was host for Emperor Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, when he visited Luxembourg.

A few years later, there was a big fure caused when lightning struck the Church of the Franciscans
and ignited gunpowder stored in its basement. In 1573, twenty years after the fire, the rebuilding started and was finished a year later.

In 1683, the building was bombarded by the troops of Louis XIV. During the attack its cellars  provided refuge for inhabitants seeking shelter. Again, the building had to be restored. Subsequently, its main part became home to the estates, like the provincial representation.

In 1741, the town hall was extended by a building commonly known as La Balance.

During the French rule (1795-1814) the town hall was home to the prefecture of the new Département des Forêts and hosted Napoleon I.

After the French rule, from 1815 onwards, the town hall was home to the Government Commission and the various other governments until 1867. Starting in 1848, not only the executive power was housed at the town hall, but also the legislative power when the Chamber of Deputies moved in. In 1860 the Chamber of Deputies moved to its present location to the right of the palace. During the gala dinner, some of the guests will actually have their meals in the rooms of the chamber.

The former town hall accommodated William II, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, as well as William III, during their occasional visits to Luxembourg. For some 28 years, Prince Henry – Grand Duke William III’s lieutenant-representative for Luxembourg affairs – and his wife regularly stayed there for longer periods of time.

After the Luxembourg crisis in 1867, a lot of buildings in the city were vacated as the Prussian troops had to leave the city because it was demilitarised. This prompted administration to move into those empty buildings.

Photo: José-Noël Doumont / Cour grand-ducale
Extensive refurbishment of the palace were undertaken when the Weilburg line of the House of Nassau took power in Luxembourg after the Orange-Nassau line had become extinct in male line. Grand Duke Adolph transformed existing premises completely and added of a new wing in the courtyard.

During the occupation during World War II the palais was converted into a tavern. Art works and other values were taken away but thankfully later recovered.

Since Grand Duke Jean became head of state in 1964, the palais has undergone various renovation keeping up with modern standarts and personal taste.

Article 44 of the Constitution of the Grand Duchy states that the palais grand-ducale in Luxembourg and Berg Castle are reserved for the residence of the reigning Grand Duke. Thus, the palais is the daily workplace of the Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess and the Hereditary Grand Duke.

The palais plays various roles in various official functions in the Grand Duchy. On national day a gala dinner is hosted there, as will be tonight.

The Civil Wedding

Photo: Luxemburger Wort / Wort.lu

They are married!! This afternoon Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy were civilly married in a civil ceremony at the Town Hall. We haven't seen video footage of the wedding yet but over at Wort you can listen to the audio of the wedding. It was a very sweet touch that Guillaume said "Oui" (in French), while his wife Princess Stéphanie said "Jo" (in Luxembourgish). Mayor Xavier Bettel conducted the ceremony in both Luxembourgish and French.

Present for the civil wedding were Grand Duke Henri, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Prince Félix, Prince Louis, Princess Tessy, Princess Alexandra and Prince Sébastien. Stéphanie's father the Count de Lannoy as well as many of her siblings and siblings-in-law were also present.

Before and after the wedding Guillaume and Stéphanie as well as their family made their way from the palais to the Town Hall by foot. Along the way Stéphanie and Guillaume greeted the onlookers tirelessly: Princess Stéphanie is a pro at working the crowd. Kisses, hugs, petting dogs... I'm certain that she'll be a great asset to the Grand Ducal Family. Also, Stéphanie and Guillaume seemed very much at ease which each other which was lovely to see.
