This week Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie welcomed the President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer in snowy Vaduz for an official visit. The Austrian head of state's visit to the Principality served to foster the friendly relations between the two neighboring countries and to exchange views on current bilateral and European issues, in particular Austria's upcoming Presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2018.
Already last night, there was a dinner in a small circle hosted for President Van der Bellen. Earlier today, the official welcoming ceremony, which included the playing of the national anthems, took place at Schloss Vaduz. While Hereditary Prince Alois awarded the Austrian Presidentwith the Grand Star of the Princely Order of Liechtenstein, Hereditary Princess Sophie given the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria by the President.
Afterwards, visits to the Marxer-Haus, which was designed by Austrian architect Falkeis as an energy autonomous house, and the company Hoval, one of the leading international companies for indoor climate solutions, were on the programme. The Hereditary Prince and Hereditary Princess also hosted an official luncheon with various of the Principality dignitaries, including Prime Minister and the cabinet, also present for the occasion.
Federal President Van der Bellen also paid a visit to the University of Liechtenstein and met with students from Austria, which is the largest group of students in the Principality. At the end of the visit, the Austrian President invited guests to a reception at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The invitation was followed by Liechtenstein public figures as well as Austrians living abroad in Liechtenstein.
