On April 24th in Yerevan, Armenia, Burundian humanitarian Marguerite Barankitse became the first recipient of the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. The Prize was created to recognize someone "whose actions have had an exceptional impact on preserving human life and advancing humanitarian causes" (Aurora Prize website). George Clooney was there to give Barankitse the award.
Additionally, Barankitse as the first Prize Laureate will receive an award of US $100,000 as well as the opportunity to return US $1,000,000 to the organizations that have supported and encouraged her humanitarian work. The Foundation of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess is one of three organizations that Barankitse will be honoring. (The other two are the Bridderlech Deelen Foundation, also in Luxembourg, and the Jean-François Peterbroeck Foundation in Belgium.)
Marguerite Barankitse has a long history with the Foundation, which has supported her work for a number of years.
