On the 15th, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa received in audience Nadia Mourad Bassi Taha and Lamiya Aji Bachar, the two winners of this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The Prize is awarded by the European Parliament to recognize those who defend human rights. This year's winners are both from the Yazidi community in Iraq, and both faced extreme violence while held in captivity by the Islamic State.
Sakharov Prize winners Nadia Mourad Bassi Taha and Lamiya Aji Bachar have since become internatioal activists who focus on speaking out about the human rights violations being committed against the Yazidis.
The Grand Duchess also tweeted about the meeting here.
