The Prince and the Forest

Opened in 1962, the Naturpark Sparbach is the oldest nature park in the whole of Austria though it is actually owned by a foreign head of state. As you probably already guessed, that foreign head of state is the Prince of Liechtenstein. Established by Prince Johann I, the Naturpark features a number of artificial ruins and ornamental buildings as well as an actual ruin, the Burgruine Johannstein, which was built in the 12th century and has been in the hands of the Liechtenstein family since 1806.

Why I'm telling you all of this? Yesterday, nine classes from around Sparbach participated in a competition featuring a bunch of activities such as crossbow shooting. The aim of the event was for the sixth graders to get to know the forest better and while doing so they got to meet none other than Prince Constantin, who as head of the Foundation Prince Liechtenstein is the manager of the Princely Family's Austrian estates.
