Visiting Differdange

Turns out Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie have not abandoned their plan of visiting the Grand Duchy's fifteen Centres de Développement et d'Attraction after all. After Mersch, Vianden, Echternach and Redange in May, Dudelange and Esch-sur-Alzette in June, Clerveaux in July and the town of Luxembourg in December of last year, they made a visit to Differdange today.

Located in south-western Luxembourg, Differdange is mostly famous for being an industrial city and home to much of the Grand Duchy's steel production. Being the third biggest Luxembourgish town, more than 50 percent of Differdange's population are foreigners.

The Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess' visit to the city started at Differdange's town hall where they were welcomed by local mayor Roberto Traversini and a bunch of other officials. Together they visited the Château de Differdange, which, built in 1577, houses the European branch of the Miami University. At the château they were welcomed by university officials as well as students, before making their way to the Maison relais, an all-day care with high flexibility for children between the ages of four and twelve, to mingle with Differdange's young citizens and receive some adorable gifts.

Afterwards Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie, wearing what looks like Diane von Furstenberg at first glance though we'll further investigate, took part in the unveiling of the flower clock at the Parc Gerlache. Originally built in 1933, the clock has been newly renovated and is one of Differdange's landmarks. After also meeting members of the town's Seniors Club, the Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple viewed a short film about the town at the cultural centre located at the old town hall. To round off the day, a wine reception was hosted in the couple's honour.

More pictures of the day are available at Wort in German, Wort in French and Wort in English as well as at the cour.
