Yesterday was the United Nation's Universal Children's Day. The date November 20 marks the day on which the UN assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. To mark the event, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa met with the young Syrian Hanin Mahmud (16), her mother, and Omar El-Hattab, Chief of Water, Environment and Sanitation for UNICEF Pakistan, as well as Maryse Arendt, President of UNICEF Luxembourg.

Hanin Mahmud, her mother and sister fled Syria at the age of 13. After staying in Istanbul for two years under difficult circumstances and seperated from her family, she fled via Hungary to Austria, where she has been living since one year. The young refugee has since launched a Twitter campaign under the hashtag #youthtakeover together with friends.
