While only the Grand Duke was scheduled to do so, Luxembourg's head of state, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa as well as their grandsons Prince Gabriel and Prince Noah all visited Findel Airport yesterday. What a lovely surprise! To mark the 70th anniversary of the return from exile of the Grand Duchess Charlotte in a Breitling Douglas DC3, an open house featuring a static display of military and historical aircraft as well as with flights in a DC3 was organised at the airport.

Grand Duke Henri grabbed the chance for a flight with the historical aircraft that carried his grandmother home after her exile during World War II. On April 14, 1945, she arrived in the Grand Duchy in the personal DC3 of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, at the time the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. Also on board in 1945 were Prince Felix, the future Grand Duke Jean and Princess Alix. The scenic flight over Luxembourg yesterday also included glimpses of the grand ducal residences, Château de Berg and Château de Fischbach.

Prior to the Grand Duke's flight with the DC3, his grandsons, Prince Gabriel and Prince Noah, were able to discover the aircraft's cockpit. All three of them were also joined by Grand Duchess Maria-to view the other aircrafts and military vehicles on display yesterday. Also shown was the Buick car in which members of the Grand Ducal Family fled Luxembourg in 1940.
