Today world leaders gathered in the Normandy to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Naturally, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria-Teresa as well as Grand Duke Jean, who was one of those landing on the Normandy's beaches in June 1944, and a number of Luxembourgish politicians also travelled to the north of France to take part in the commemorations.
Before the official ceremony at Sword Beach in Ouistreham, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess attended a luncheon hosted by the French President François Hollande for all heads of state and govenment attending the D-Day events. During the luncheon at the Château de Bénouville near Caen Grand Duke Henri had the (let's say) interesting honour of being seated next to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Being the gentleman he is, the Grand Duke apparently also had a quick reaction after the official pictures of all the heads of state and government present were taken when he saved Queen Margrethe II of Denmark from tripping (or rather falling after tripping).
Luxembourg-centric pictures, amongst others of Grand Duke Jean greeting The Duke of Edinburgh and The Queen of Denmark, are available at the cour, Tageblatt, Le Quotidien and Wort in German.
