King Juan Carlos of Spain Abdicates

This morning Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the intention of the country's King Juan Carlos to abdicate later this year. After a new constitutional amendment is proposed to actually allow for the abdication, the Prince of Astrurias is to become the new monarch. Later in the day, Grand Duke Henri sent his Spanish counterpart a message reading as the following:

Majesté,
C’est avec une grande émotion que la Grande-Duchesse et moi-même avons pris connaissance de Votre décision de passer les responsabilités du Royaume à Votre fils le Prince Felipe.
En tant que Monarque, Vous avez accompagné l’Espagne vers la modernité institutionnelle et économique. L’Histoire rendra hommage à Votre règne de trente-neuf ans.
Nous nous souvenons avec joie des visites bilatérales et de la grande affection que Vous nous avez toujours témoignée ensemble avec la Reine.
Je suis sûr que les futurs Souverains accompliront Leur tâche avec coeur et intelligence. Ils fonderont Leur action sur l’héritage solide que Vous Leur léguez.

It is with great emotion that The Grand Duchess and I have taken note of Your decision to pass the responsibilities of the Kingdom to Your son, Prince Felipe.

In the position of the monarch you accompanied Spain on its way into institutional and economic modernity. History will honour Your reign of 39 years.

We remember with joy the bilaterial visits and the great affection which You and The Queen have always shown us.

I am sure that the future monarchs will accomplish their tasks with with heart and intelligence. They will base their actions on the legacy which you bequeath.
